Minister for Health says opening schools one day a week would benefit students’ wellbeing

Any easing of measures will depend on public compliance and the advice of public health experts.

In Denmark, for example, pupils’ desks are spaced apart and children are required to wash their hands on an hourly basis. At break-time, children are only allowed out in small groups. “I’d like to see a situation whereby our schools could come back or at least could come partially back. Now I can’t guarantee the timeline for this, but in terms of you’re asking me the hierarchy of things, I’d like to see comeback that would be one of them,” he told the newspaper.

“From a socially distanced, safe point of view, meet their friends, and then go home. That would provide breathing space for families and information and I think that would help.”

Surely it should be leaving cert students only. Personally I am a bit scared to send my kids (13, 11, 6) back to school before Sept.

This is a terrible idea. The gains are so little, especially so late in the school year, and the danger of asymptomatic children spreading the virus to other children who then bring it home to vulnerable family members is surely enormous? Start making a plan for september instead

Slow down fool we have to count out the ccp first before we count kids back in to school,,

The only kids that really need to be back in school are those doing Leaving Cert so they all have the opportunity to finish their courses! Mental health or not, they have to be priority! 🙄🙄

Clueless chickens being drip fed by their whoremasters in Brussels.

They should be focusing all their energies on the Leaving cert kids. This govt is (imo) overly focused on young children (eg. free doctor, free preschools & I’ve no objections to these btw) but current LC’s got none of these benefits....put LC’s first SimonHarrisTD simoncoveney

It could be a long time before a vaccine is available. It took 4 years to bring one to widespread use it for mumps. Accoring to vaccine director of GSK 18 months is too much if a stretch. Some of people giving out about schools reopening must want to be locked up for years

So will he and the government take responsibility for s cluster outbreak of Covid 19 in a school as a consequence of reopening schools without a vaccination program or proper PPE....

What about re opening allotments? I have paid rent for my plot. The reasons given for their closure have no validity whatsoever. The food l have grow for me and my family is now going rotten and future food production is in jeopardy. I'm tired of being ignored 😡

‘imagine if children could go into school, even one day a week [to] get the books, meet the teacher, get the homework for the week.’ I’d prefer to imagine it than unnecessarily send my child in get books

Only children that should be broughtback for the moment are the Leaving Cert Year

No hot water, 2 toilets to sometimes 60 kids. Could probably only fit 4 kids and teacher into the callsrooms at a 2m distance. Neglect of our schools and overcrowding has its consequences. As did the halving of our P hospital beds which started well before the '08 financial crash

He obviously hasn’t seen the size of some of the classrooms around the country.. sardines in a tin.. not a hope of social distancing

Nuts school will be a Petri dish of infection

Surely leaving cert students should be the first. They should be the government’s priority given the added stress they are under with no exam dates, results dates, college places. Their world has been turned upside down more than most

I’d say the kids are looking forward to seeing all their pals again. It’s not easy for them cooped up at home.

A Leaving Cert student completely obliterated Joe Mchugh’s plan to hold the exams in July with a single article...

It may sound odd, but with the return of a bit of better weather in May it would be possible to run “hedge schools” not literally but it would be possible to have school outside, at least for social if not educational benefits

If Leaving Cert. students are being brought back to school for two weeks on July , why the rush to bring primary age children back? Secondary age can do social distancing far more easily than 5 year olds.
