I have spent a lot of time over the past few weeks researching what I can do to improve my chances of firstly, not contracting the virus, and secondly, if exposed, lessening the impact.Credit:Obviously I am following all the government guidelines regarding hand washing, isolation and physical distancing in an attempt to avoid infection.
But I have also been taking measures to maximise my immunity. Of course, the only thing that can boost immunity and prevent COVID-19 is a vaccine, but there are other things you can do to maintain a healthy body and improve your chances of fighting the virus.Specifically, I’ve been paying close attention to seven lifestyle issues – nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep, smoking, alcohol and sun – which can promote one’s defences against infection.
Instead, choose unprocessed foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy, non-starchy vegetables, berries, nuts and olive oil.I drink water, milk, coffee and green tea with an occasional glass of wine or beer. If I am having beer I will choose one of the low-carbohydrate varieties. I avoid soft drinks, fruit juices, flavoured milks and energy drinks.Food is fuel
Breakfast is either full-fat Greek yoghurt with a mixture of nuts and seeds topped with cinnamon, or cooked eggs with a combination of bacon, mushrooms, smoked salmon and avocado. Lunch is a salad, or simply some nuts and cheese. The evening meal is meat or fish and non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli, green beans and cauliflower. If I'm craving pasta, I will use zucchini noodles , and have my curries on a bed of cauliflower rice, in an effort to avoid starchy foods high in carbohydrates.
