Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, says at least 600,000 South Africans will be tested for coronavirus in the coming weeks.

"As we speak now, we can do more than 400, 000 tests. The new order will enable us to do 400 000 tests. We already had in the system about 120,000 from the government in addition to 80,000 from the private sector. So that gives us around 600, 000 tests and we are still ordering more", said Mkhize.

Mkhize said there has been an increase in tests conducted at public laboratories.Watch the full interview with Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize in the video above.Help protect your loved ones by sharing this officialThe NICD has another Clinician Hotline to improve #COVID19 communication and support for healthcare providers. And there’s how many million people in SA? Mmhhh.....

Where are they from?.... if not locally made... siyawabonga

The current testing is useless except to treat active cases. We need antibody tests so we can understand the extent that the virus has spread into the population. It’s happening overseas why not here, why we wasting time with useless tests.

TimModise This rolling out business has been said said since day 1 but nothing is happening Public servant are focused on looting spree and dont give AF

The UK has dine +-300k tests, with infected of around 80k = +-35%. Canada tested just over 400k, with infections of +- 24k = +- 5.7% I dunno how many tests were done in US, but they have 550k cases. RSA has 80k tests done, with just over 2k of cases. We must soonest lift tests.

I am not sure that broad based testing will help us in any way. People with symptoms should be tested of course but to better understand how C-19 develops in SA we should do targeted samples (of say 1.000 each) in different areas from which we can extrapolate the data.

For 55milion + people

how can South Africa manage this and the UK appears not to be able to do so?

Is that so, with your 2 to 5k tests per day. Lockdown ending which year?

They better move with the testing! We need to understand the extent of the spread.

30 April SA would have tested 90/ 95k. We are very very slow in testing. No equipment, our government invested in looting, now no money

I So Wonder, When Will This People Stop Lying to us and come to the Party (as they say) With The Truth😠

Uhmm! This is not true, listen to the clip again. The aim is to conduct at least 400k tests.

Still far less in testing, only 80000 have tested. How long is it gonna take to rich 600k?

When? The testing process is too slow.

Where are these tests from, have they been thoroughly checked for contamination?

Not enough

The only way to test more people would be if mayors for municipalities were active in this. The gov wants to handle this at national level and they will always fail. If every mayor was given a percentage to cover, a day, it would be best.

“Coming weeks” could mean anything. It’s great that we can have 600000 test kits but do you have the man power to ramp up the number of tests done and would the Labs be capable of processing higher number of tests at a rapid rate? DrZweliMkhize

When?

A virus that can be illuminated by washing or sanitising hands with an alcohol bases sanitizer but we need a vaccine and testing?this sounds odd

When? Next year?

By when exactly? What does 'coming weeks' mean specifically? Will the increase in testing volumes be accompanied by much more detail in the data shared with South Africans?

We've been at home for more than 14 days with no symptoms or any illnesses, why we test now? Is there something you not telling us?

Should have been atleast 1% of the population by now but we really moving slow I don't know why maybe that's why we reporting low number of cases because we testing 5k people a day when he promised to go to 30k a day

I battle to see how this will be achieved in a country that cannot even maintain its credit rating

You don’t even have kits but you locked down the country what a dangerous move which showed no thought at all and you admit it

Only. Now we know why the Zuma years were a waste.

During this Lockdown, thrilling one. People are getting tested and relaxing at their home. We as essential workers are struggling at work. Treated like slaves by our managers,my manager is really giving me tough time. I need help, really need one

We are moving to the right direction, we can’t keep on testing few people then claim that we have few cases of COVID-19.

WHEN. I'm ready to get tested.

Sorry men.. people stay home to avoid being on the next statists. Please educate us on how this stats is retrieved? I believe so many people are not yet tested. So this numbers are not accurate and it should be mentioned every time stats is given. Ignorance is what is going to kill people in South Africa.... in Tembisa, Diepsloot, Thokoza, they are carrying on as if there's No LockdownSA.
