extends its deadly reach into new hotspots such as Detroit and New Orleans, its proliferation has been accompanied by a disturbing trend. The disease appears to be taking a greater toll on black Americans. African-Americans make up 14% of Michigan’s population. Yet as of April 6th they accounted for some 33% of confirmed coronavirus cases and 40% of the state’s 617 deaths.

In addition to living in cities that covid-19 struck early, African-Americans share several other vulnerabilities to the disease. Black Americans are, on average, poorer than other ethnic groups. Those who live in overcrowded homes or who work in blue-collar jobs and must keep toiling outside their houses cannot isolate themselves as easily as better-off folk. The poor and uninsured—African-Americans are likeliest to go without coverage—may also seek medical care too late.

More important, though, is the link between race and chronic ill-health. Chicago’s mayor, Lori Lightfoot, recently noted that before the pandemic white residents were expected to live nearly nine years longer than black ones, who are likelier to suffer from chronic health problems such as respiratory illness, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

Many articles quickly point to the “racial” gap-which data says exist-but what other underlying factors are contributory. Higher rates of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure? If so, how do we address those? Another race being “bad” can’t be a reason for higher morbidity.

How when everything is empty slap covid 19 to a heart attack

And shines light on lifestyle choices it seems if you ever got round to any sort of scientific analysis.

Could the disproportionate Mediterranean and African American deaths be due to existing hemoglobinopathies SSHb, Mediterranean anemia.

So who accounts for the 60% of deaths?

Very sad

This virus is killing everyone that Trump would like dead...minorities, poor, disabled, sick, old. He didn't have to do all this to eliminate social security, medicare, Medicaid and disability payments...oh don't forget food stamps and health care.

Maybe this is why? DO YOUR PART PEOPLE!!!!!

Soooooo you trying to say that this virus is racist? Come on how bout getting back publishing to serious articles? You can do better then using the race card during a pandemic to get views....

I presume this is a reflection of economic status, people who are well off can afford to stay home and stay safe while those who aren’t make the choice to keep going to work because they neither can work from home nor can they afford to forfeit their income

Welp, there will be ten task forces assembled to determine the reasons are everything but the truth, but hey, we all know this is the deal these days. StayWoke

In a country w/o universal healthcare, is it so surprising that the most vulnerable socioeconomic classes are dying at a greater rate?

1.2.3...Incoming... 'Race card' comments that try and distract us from the issue at hand. Im glad were talking about this, but white people just feel attacked every time its brought up. Might as well just fucking stop. lol

Most of the deaths are in Detroit which is a majority black city. Using 14% as a comparative makes no sense.

Not to discount the issue here, because there is one. However, where are an overwhelming majority of cases in Michigan originating?

Jesus Christ is Lord and only Jesus can save us from our sins.
