of coral reefs would die within the next century, threatening life for so many marine creatures that I came to adore after watchingI didn’t want to just sit back as it happened. For the first time, I felt as though I could do something radical with my life; I could inspire social change. Rather than hopelessness, I felt a sense of purpose.was attending a summer camp called Youth Empowered Action Camp or YEA Camp.
Despite my newfound purpose, I was still nervous about making friends and finding people to relate to at camp. What I didn’t know then is that not only would activism provide me with a life’s mission, but a community too. Before signing up for camp, I read several testimonies that said YEA Campers felt like family within the first few days of camp. I was skeptical as it seemed too good to be true. How could I bond so intimately with a person in less than a week? I had gone to school with people my whole life and they still felt like strangers.
Turns out, they were right. In less then a day I was telling people I loved them and sharing stories with them I had never told out loud before. The week felt like one long therapy session. I discovered things about myself I never knew to be true. It was then that I knew activists were special people who had the power to connect with others on a spiritual level. Activists have such a deep passion for helping people that they instantly want to help each other. They are so aware of social issues and don’t care about conventional things most people see. It doesn’t matter who you are: your sexuality, gender, race, religion, or age as they see past all of that. They see you for your passion and your soul.
