'I became a doctor for one simple reason: to save lives. At a time when the NHS needs all the help it can get, I felt like I had no other choice but to join my colleagues in the fight against coronavirus.'

A new mental health helpline for NHS staff has been set up to help us deal with the stress of the pandemic.I joined the NHS in 2011 and began to specialise as an A&E doctor before I felt I had no choice but to leave. I knew my mental health would significantly suffer if I was to stay in the ever-narrowing structures of the NHS.

Even before Covid-19, almost one in three Doctors reported experiencing stress, burnout and ‘compassion fatigue’. In recent years there has also been a rise in the number oflives, indicating that mental health support services for NHS staff in the past have not been nearly as comprehensive as needed.

Protecting the well-being of those we depend on when it matters most should always be a matter of national urgency One Friday night, as I was wrestling with septic shock, there was just one junior doctor covering the entire hospital. Ultimately, I self-discharged and moved to another hospital that was better staffed.
