Coronavirus Ireland: Cases would be 'heading for 100,000 a day' if public didn't adopt social distancing

Coronavirus cases would be heading for 100,000 a day if the public had not adopted social distancing, it emerged on Thursday night.

The chair of the National Public Health Emergency Team’s modelling group said he was impressed the public response had helped flatten the curve of new infections. Prof Nolan said: “There is clear evidence that the social distancing measures are having a profound effect on the transmission of the virus.”

There are 317 Covid-19 clusters in the country and 1,521 people have been hospitalised with the bug – an increase of 49 in a day.The median age of everyone who has caught the disease is 48.
