What impact will COVID-19 have on young people and their mental health and what is needed to help them navigate the crisis?

Charlie's university moved courses online. Her work shifts were cancelled. All her usual social activities were canned.

"I have had some issues with mild anxiety and stress before. If things start to go downward, then I can really spiral," she says.Charlie's story comes as no surprise to Patrick McGorry, one of Australia's leading mental health experts, who warns young people's mental health needs during the COVID-19 response require urgent attention.

"But people with existing problems, which is about a quarter of them at any one time, are going to get worse in many cases. So, I think that it increases the risk of youth suicide."

Having to spend their time not talking to each other and just browsing phones must be awful.

How can this b true, this generation does not talk to people, they spend all their time on Facebook rather than talking to the person right next to them, and if they r talking to the person next to them it is done via text messages

Because they're snowflakes?

Wow, I am appalled at the sheer lack of empathy in the comments here. Loneliness has been proven to have seriously detrimental effects to the body and the brain. Stigmatising it just pushes people further away from help, and closer to the brink. Shame is NOT productive.

Now they know how the forgotten old people feel.

Quick, where’s a safe space to hide in. If we ever have WW3, God help Australia because our youths won’t.

You mean they are hoping . Look at the word ‘anticipated ‘ it ‘appears’ they care . But what if it’s actually advertising Mmm! To plant the idea ! Wake up !

Personality disorders mostly, be careful pandering to this stuff. (Mental health nurse)

WTF We are asking young people to STAY HOME not spend time in a high security prison with hard labour. We are 'breeding' the resilience out of our youth. They live looking into a screen and their parents are panicking about allergies. Hmm I'm going for a peanut butter sandwich.

Don't be mean to them..this is a learning curve...

Most mental health issues are imaginary. HTFU

Could be worse. Maybe consider Polio.

Oh, FFS, can we stop mollycoddling then. They need to grow the up and learn some resilience.

woow, so many boomers commenting on this tweet

Only if their wifi stops working

Tell them it's not about them!

can you imagine if we actually had to go to war

Yeah nah …

Rubbish

How can you say social distancing is an issue. When they do everything by social media. Even if they are in the same room.

Part of the sting of being lonely is the belief that other people are out there socialising and enjoying their lives. Knowing that everyone is also staying in would be beneficial to typical loners. It’s the so-called social butterflies who will struggle the most with isolation.

Remember when people were tough?

Diddums. We have tens of thousands of disabled and aged people for whom it is their entire life. Get a grip.

I may have joked earlier about being happy i'm an introvert. But i legitimately feel sorry for social people this has gotta be hard on them. To those that are used to social stuff.... Discord is a great way to talk to friends and can be installed on your phone.
