While the elderly and vulnerable should be isolated and protected, it is important the coronavirus response does not cause the world to sink to a global depression, according to former Australian Conservatives Senator Cory Bernardi.

While the elderly and those with chronic diseases should be isolated and protected, it is important the coronavirus response does not cause the world to sink to a global depression, according to former Australian Conservatives Senator Cory Bernardi. US President Donald Trump surprised many observers when he said he did not want America's non-essential businesses to be closed for an extended period of time, stating the country "was not built to be shut down".

That comment is at odds with the advice of most medical bodies, who argue non-essential businesses should be shut and for the public to adhere to social distancing practices. There are at least 42,600 cases in America, including 540 deaths. Mr Bernardi said while the disease is a "tragedy for the most vulnerable...the cure is sending Australia into a recession, possible a depression".

The same mentality that said it was necessary to send millions of youths to their deaths in WW1.

Why thank you Dr Bernardi.

Typically stupid answer from Bernardi.

CRUISE SHIP DEATH: Infected passenger who entered Australia dies from coronavirus | Sky News AustraliaOne of the Ruby Princess cruise ship passengers who entered Australia while infected with the coronavirus has today died from the sickness.\n\nSky News can reveal the elderly woman, in her 70s, was one of the 50 passengers who have tested positive for the virus who were able to enter Sydney in a catastrophic health bungle.\n\nShe has become the 8th person in Australia to die from coronavirus.\n\nMaritime Union of Australia Assistant Secretary Paul Garrett has previously slammed state and federal authorities for allowing the passengers to enter the country amid a state-wide shutdown.\n\nMr Garrett told Sky News Australia the Ruby Princess cruise ship “was allowed to dock under the cover of darkness, and now there’s multiple cases out there in the community which should have been quarantined”. \n\nMr Garrett said government officials needed to “get on board these ships and check them before they come in” rather than trusting cruise ship companies to declare if their passengers are unwell. \n\n“They’re just relying on self-declaration of ships, that’s the standard the NSW government’s accepting and that’s an absolute disgrace,” he said. \n\n“The ministers for health and port authorities need to stop any cruise ship from coming in until those on board have been checked. \n\n“At the end of the day, we’re in a national crisis, an international health pandemic and we need the government to stand up and start leading on these issues.”\n\nsays the government must “suspend all cruise ship movements until proper protocols are put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19”. \n Karma baby. I find the use of the word ‘snuck’ judgemental and directs the blame to the individual who may not have known they were ill or if they were was not isolated by authorities when they should have been detected when leaving the ship. Snuck in? You mean let in by an incompetent government?

SHUTDOWN EXTENDED: Aussies face drastically increased coronavirus restrictions | Sky News AustraliaFunerals, weddings and backyard barbeques face dramatic restrictions under a radical, ramped up coronavirus crackdown in a desperate bid to ease the rapidly rising number of infected Australians.\n\nPrime Minister Scott Morrison described the restrictions as a fundamental change to the way Australians live in coming months but maintained the “sacrifice” was essential if the country was to avoid the fate of Italy.\n\nFunerals will be limited to just 10 people and wedding ceremonies were completely banned with couples told they can now only be married in front of a celebrant and witness rather than a room full of their friends and families.\n\nBarbeques and even intimate family dinners were strongly discouraged although Mr Morrison pleaded with the Australian public to use common sense rather than setting official attendance caps inside homes.\n\n“2020 for most Australians is going to be their toughest year … these are heartbreaking events in our nation’s history and story,” he said.\n\n“We are not unconscious of the real impacts these measures are having on the daily lives of Australians.\n\n“Stay at home unless it’s absolutely necessary that you go out.”\n\nBeauty parlours, swimming pools and wellness spas and massage parlours all joined the list of banned activities.\n\nMr Morrison said that food courts in shopping centres must close within 24 hours but takeaway services at all cafes and restaurants would still go ahead. barely dramatic. I expected schools and businesses to be forced to close. The economy needs to function for now set ur clocks to this time next week or the week after we will be in lockdown but u cannot go to early the effects on our economy would be worse the suicides alone would be as bad a the virus

'Millions of Britons are essentially under house arrest' amid coronavirus lockdown | Sky News AustraliaEditor of Spiked Online Brendan O’Neill says he has 'concerns' following the recent lockdown announcement by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in which he warned people to stay at home or face a fine in a bid to tackle the coronavirus spread. \n\nIn an historic TV address to the nation, the prime minister said all shops apart from food stores and chemists were required to close immediately, meeting friends will be banned and just one form of exercise a day will be allowed.\n\nThe COVID-19 lockdown, which will be in force for at least three weeks, follows growing pressure in recent days from the government's top medical advisers and senior politicians.\n\n'I have some concerns myself and I think other people probably have concerns too,' Mr O'Neill told Sky News host Peta Credlin. \n\n'Everyone agrees we need to fight this disease but these measures are quite severe,' he said. \n\n'Essentially millions of millions of Britons are now under house arrest'. \n\nMr O'Neill also said he believes the government must factor in the potential 'health consequences of a lockdown like this'. \n\n'I’m worried that older people in particular will become incredibly isolated through this process'. \n\n'And of course there’s the long term economic hit that the UK is absolutely going to take'. \n\nImage: AP \n\n Damned if he do and damned if he dont. Rarely agree with Johnson on anything but he did warn people that if they couldnt shoulder the responsibility of changing their own habits, he would enforce it. House-arrest? Like accusing a doctor performing CPR of GBH. Be responsible folks
