Younger people critically ill with coronavirus in Sydney hospitals | Kaubo

NSW Health confirmed 136 new coronavirus cases between Sunday and Monday morning, the biggest jump to date, that took the state's total to 669.

Australia's Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy said the "fairly draconian measures" to close down non-essential services were necessary because too many people had a "cavalier attitude" to containment. One of the first cases of community transmissions was a 53-year-old doctor who was admitted to Westmead Hospital's ICU and was administered experimental treatment, an HIV medication reserved only for the sickest patients.

Several of the newly confirmed coronavirus cases in Sydney are backpackers, and health authorities suspect they contracted the infection at parties in Bondi and Darlinghurst.
