Leaders of the House of Representatives called on the Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday, March 22, to allow the proposed establishment of a testing center on the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) in Tacloban City.

House Majority Leader and Leyte first district Rep. Martin Romualdez and Tingog party-list Rep. Yedda Marie K. Romualdez expressed Tacloban City’s readiness to handle screening for COVID-19 after the DOH reported that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased to 380.

“Help us and we will help ourselves…We are prepared and capable to handle COVID-19 screening,” they said, citing the urgent need to establish additional facilities for COVID-19 laboratory tests. They noted that the proposed establishment of a testing center in Tacloban City “is also being supported by private-public partnership to further boost government’s campaign against the dreaded disease.”

The request to set up a testing center in Tacloban City was formally made by Philippine Medical Association of Medical Technologists officer Carlo Chris Apurillo and St Scholastica’s College Tacloban Department of Medical Laboratory Science chairperson Clive Ivan Mercado in a letter to the DOH.
