Editor of Spiked Online Brendan O’Neill says the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has adopted a “trusting democratic approach to combatting this disease”.

20/03/2020 Despite coronavirus fatalities in Britain having risen to 144, the government has resisted a national lock down and has not yet banned large gatherings or closed its borders to non-residents. Mr O’Neill said “I think Boris is very keen not to go down the same route that we’ve seen in some European countries particularly Italy where it has been incredibly severe and also France and Spain where there has been a pretty authoritarian response”.

“Boris is emphasising the voluntaristic nature” of health precautions such as social distancing and saying “I trust British citizens to take the right action, I don’t think we should force them by law to do so and we will keep an eye on them and see how that progresses” Mr O’Neill told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. “It’s about maintaining the freedom and the health of society while at the same time tackling the impact this disease has on individuals.
