The Government says keeping schools open is good health policy but many teachers feel they're being put in harm's way while everyone else is being told to practise social distancing — and some are even being abused by parents for their efforts.

Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan praised the teachers and principals for their hard work.

Central to teacher anger is health advice encouraging vulnerable groups, including those over 70, pregnant woman, new parents and those with chronic conditions to isolate while teachers with those conditions have been required in classrooms."We want urgent action from the departments in order to look after the needs of that more vulnerable group of members and we hope to get a response from them as soon as possible," he said.

It is understood state departments are considering the request and some allowance may be made for immunosuppressed staff. In an open letter, the Independent Education Union of Australia also called for vulnerable teachers to be given permission to work from home.

Who writes these shorthand headlines

They aren't schools, they are simply holding pens. Let's be honest, this is nothing to do with the safety of the teachers or kids. Its all about keeping the economy going, Politicians can't get kick backs if businesses shut down

Schools should ONLY remain open for children whose parents work in essential services and for those who must work for economic reasons. ALL OTHER STUDENTS NEED TO STAY HOME under parental supervision. The loss of a few months education is unimportant when lives are in danger!

Than take kids home for god’s sake and don’t blame teachers

Our schools went out for 2 week spring break on Fri 13 March. We were notified Tues 17 March all schools in British Columbia are closed 'til the Fall. Seems to happening province by province in Canada. Our province has significant issue w/COVID-19. (231cases.)

My school has 12 days before supplies arrive. Meanwhile added responsibility of disinfecting iPads between use and some areas of my classroom 🤨

I think I speak for many, we're not worried about sick kids, we're scared it's coming HOME. Reasoning to stay open in many cases is not applicable and what we're told is happening is NOT. Talking to my older kids, hygeine/distancing is not being supported OR enforced. It CAN'T.

It’s so sad to see, restaurants and bars throughout crows nest and chatswood were full last night. People sitting shoulder to shoulder. No consideration for the risk to the community they are creating

a friend who works in supermarkets ran me through the abuse they are coping at the moment the veneer of civility is extremely thin
