City street traffic and subway ridership around the country plummeted last week as people hunkered down to wait out the coronavirus pandemic, turning bustling cities into ghost towns almost overnight.

That could also serve as an initial rough measure of falling commercial activity as people follow public health authorities’ advice to limit contact with others. Many businesses that rely on foot traffic already say they are barely hanging on.
