Josh Frydenberg insists Australia is well-prepared to deal with the economic fallout of COVID-19, as the treasurer talks forward the May budget as a source for further economic stimulus. Prime Minister Scott Morrison will this week unveil a stimulus package expected to be worth up to $10 billion, as the coronavirus continues to batter the economy. Speaking in Canberra on Monday, Mr Frydenberg foreshadowed the potential for a further cash injection come the May budget.

“So, we will make our announcements sooner rather than later, but then there's also the Budget in eight weeks. And I think that's also important to keep that in mind.” It comes as the Australian shares plunged six per cent in the lunchtime trade. Mr Frydenberg urged Australians not to be alarmed by the market movements, and insisted volatility in such a time was not “uncommon". “Our financial system remains strong. Our economy remains strong,” he said.
