Senators on Sunday urged the Department of Health (DOH) to be more transparent to the public regarding cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines, even as they have raised the alert warning to Code Red Sublevel-1.

Senate minority leader Franklin Drilon said that under Republic Act 11332 or the law that requires “Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Health Concern Act,” the health department has the authority to declare an epidemic of national concern, like the COVID-19.

“Dapat may listahan sila ng mga diseases na posibleng maging epidemic. They are supposed to maintain a list of notifiable diseases. Ipinasa pa naming ito noong April 2016. Ngunit hanggang ngayon parang wala pang implementing rules and regulations. Mayroon po ba tayong IRR dito? ,” the Senate minority chief pointed out.

DOH, under the law, is not barred from disclosing any information about the hospitals that attended to suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases, the senator reminded. Binay pointed out the DOH is in need of risk communication experts to help them explain the facts to the public, local government officials and even to private institutions.

She said PCOO can launch a 2-minute infomercials in different dialects to inform the public about the COVID-19. PCOO, she said can also use, thru the Philippine Information Agency , the free airtime allocated for government public service announcements in national and local TV and radio stations.
