Sky News host Paul Murray says the reason smokers are continuously hit with higher and higher taxes is because “they have no political representation, no one will fight for them”.

Mr Murray said “we didn’t tax led paint, we banned it, we didn’t tax asbestos, we banned it” but tobacco won’t suffer the same fate because tobacco taxes raise $14 billion in revenue.

“We’ve hit the point where the price is not a disincentive anymore”. Deputy Lord Mayor for the City of Sydney Linda Scott told Mr Murray the tobacco tax does in fact create “a better health outcome”. Image: Getty

It is a bit of a dying industry aye

Anybody who smokes is a bloody idiot.

The National party took money from tobacco. They are in government. Conservatives aren't fighting.

Don't worry Paul most of us by chop chop these days helping the criminals

Poor little tobacco companies.

Sin taxes! Petrol, ciggies and booze! Fright up there with Scandinavian countries as the highest taxes in the world! Oppression of the minority.

What a stupid comment. Is he a certified moron or does he just identify as one. Big tobacco fight for them Paul. They have for years. Thats why smoking became so widespread.

Excise tax is applied to fuel and alcohol products too you goose, not just tobacco. Sorry, don't let me get in the way of another bull shit sensationalist Sky News story.

Smoker Paul

For the same reason no one fights for car accidents - like car accidents smoking could kill you. Can't believe that needed saying.

PMOnAir Smoking which causes multiple serious health conditions is a major burden on our Medicare budget. Taxes decrease smoking and help to pay for the Medicare bill if smokers. Are you paid by the Tobacco manufacturers to misrepresent the reason for tax?

Good. They stink.

The IPA fights for them Paul.

Just say to them its a down payment on future medical costs.

Actually the Greens policy is to decriminalise all drugs, which is an evidence based policy. But people don't vote for evidence based policies, they vote for Clive Palmer, war and climate change.
