Qantas has come under fire from workplace regulators after they found the airline may have placed passengers and staff at risk of contracting the coronavirus.

A Safe Work NSW investigation found the airline may be breaching the Health and Safety Act by failing to provide employees with proper protective equipment.

The Transport Workers’ Union Assistant National Secretary Nick McIntosh said the “lack of adequate equipment led to an unsafe system of work which has potentially exposed them to infectious diseases”. An elected health and safety representative voiced concern over Qantas’ post-flight cleaning procedures but was suspended by the airline with two employees being disciplined for also raising the issue. The company faces a fine of up to $250,000 and has a month to dispute the improvement notice.
