Adamawa: Garkida the Morning after

out by Boko Haram insurgents in Garkida town, Adamawa State becomes clearer one week after the attack,Fate of abducted kinsman uncertainAs fresh facts emerge daily regarding Boko Haram’s attack on Garkida, Adamawa State, it became clear on Thursday that a resident of the town was abducted by the insurgents.

The insurgents also targeted pharmacy and medicine stores as they invaded many of them and seized drugs and other medical items. They were also said to have burnt two ambulances and went away with two others from the General Hospital in the town. “Bitrus had fled his house when the insurgents arrived. He decided after a while to return to the house to see his father and children. Unfortunately, it was on his way back home that he ran into the insurgents and they took him away,” Andrawus said.

Speaking in confidence, the security agent said: “The soldier was found in the bush with his gun and an empty shell of cartridges. He had injury and there was also sign that he bled. “After ransacking the general hospital in the town, seizing what drugs they found and driving off with two ambulances? What exactly did the military mean by saying they intercepted Boko Haram?”

“Instinctively, the gallant troops mobilised and intercepted the criminals’ advance and engaged the marauding criminals unleashing high volume of fire, leading to the elimination of several of the criminals while others withdrew in disarray, many of them with gunshot wounds as evident in the trails of blood along their withdrawal route.”

Such damage to the Christian community prompted suggestion that the Boko Haram insurgents sought to provoke religious hatred and set Garkida on a war against itself. A major grouse articulated by Bello, a governorship candidate under the Social Democratic Party in last year’s general election in Adamawa State, was that even the few military operatives in place before the Boko Haram invasion were withdrawn.

The insurgents had given advance notice, according to an intelligence opinion, so that residents would take their cue and leave room for operation. Gombi, Hong, Mubi North and Mubi South as well as Maiha, Madagali and Michika had been the affected LGAs. And the particular church branch is significant to the EYN family. A historical account has it that Garkida is the town where EYN was first started in 1923, although the church has its headquarters at Kwarhi, a rural community in neighbouring Hong Local Government Area.
