'We are aggressively evaluating how long this virus can survive and be infectious,' CDC director Robert Redfield said during a House of Representatives hearing on the U.S. government response to the fast-spreading coronavirus

- U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Robert Redfield told the U.S. Congress on Thursday that his agency is aggressively evaluating how long coronavirus can survive and be infectious on surfaces.

He said infections contracted from surfaces rather than through the air could have contributed to the outbreak on the Diamond Princess cruise ship.Redfield also said the mortality of the virus could be lower outside of China. The World Health Organization has suggested the mortality rate in China is between 2% and 4%. Seasonal flu has a mortality rate of about 0.1%, Redfield said.
