One in three doctors in training in Australia is exposed to bullying, harassment or discrimination with potentially dangerous effects for the entire healthcare system, including patient care.
That was despite 80 per cent of respondents saying they knew how to raise concerns and 75 per cent saying their workplaces had a zero-tolerance approach to bullying, harassment and discrimination.Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders doctors in training were nearly twice as likely to report being targeted or witnessing bullying, harassment and discrimination.
Hash Abdeen, deputy chairman of the Australian Medical Association's Council of Doctors in Training, said hospitals needed to stop paying lip service to zero-tolerance policies and to take action to hold bullies to account and to protect junior doctors."We are talking about the health and safety of doctors and patients," Dr Abdeen said. "We know there can be a flow-on effect for patient safety. Governments and institutions need to take ownership of that.
"We're seeing people quitting because the environment is so toxic. When that happens, the community suffers as well," Dr Abdeen said.
Kaubo lets all pretend it's just the doctors not the entire hospital. it's a fucked and stressful environment and how long you've been there apparently dictates your social status and just how protected you are from any actions.
Kaubo Bullies abound in the medicine. Surgeons are renowned for their arrogance and sense of superiority, and there have always been those stereotypical tyrant nurses that bully young interns. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be a vulnerable young person in that field.
Kaubo I just can’t comprehend how they are meant to become well rounded professionals with the crazy hours they endure. Who is that good for? Certainly not the patients. To add bullying on top. 😫
