Why doesn’t the government invest in more health visitors. We already review women’s mental health at six weeks and prior to that. Please do an article on the role of the health visitor.

I believe the current check has been criticised for focusing mostly on the baby as it’s a joint check, and for not giving due attention to the mother’s health. This one is separate to the baby’s check so it aims to be all about mum.

Didn’t new mothers routinely have a 6 week post natal check up when my children were born in the 1980s? I did.

I had one at the GP in 2016. Although they seemed to be focused on contraception. GP- So Miss what sort of contraceptives will you be using? ME - None I am gay! 😳😳😳😳

Absolutely essential!!

I kind of assumed that already happened..!!!🤦‍♀️

As a nurse practitioner I spent 25yrs until leaving in 2015 undertaking 6wk post natal checks to assess mental emotional physical & social well being not to mention contraception if this hadn't already been discussed...so why does this article read like it's something new?

When did this stop then? Glad it’s being reinstated ..

My son was still in NICU when our GP surgery asked me to bring him in for his check 🙄 Mothers of premature babies should be given the option of being assessed at hospital instead, at such a traumatic time I didn’t want to be anywhere else.

This was normal 30yrs ago. What changed....?

I thought they were done at 6 wks as routine for both mum & baby

This is very positive news. Something we HealthwatchE advocated for during our maternity and mental health project (read more here - Make sure checks look at whole family though. Important to make sure whole support network working.

This is a great idea. For mental health as much as anything else

I think GP practices do this- it is called a 6-week check for mother and baby.

I had one after each of my 3 children 1992 - 2005 - health n wellbeing check at hospital and then at home.

It’s shameful this hasn’t been part of the care plan so far.
