Though public-health officials have urged Canadians to take a measured response, a panic akin to the one during 2003′s SARS outbreak has already taken hold

Toronto Chinatown Business Improvement Area chair Tonny Louie repeated the message that Toronto's Chinatown, seen here in November, 2019, is safe, as is the food, and called on politicians to have meals in Chinese restaurants. The message York District School Board staff had been sending to parents on the coronavirus was pretty standard: Wash your hands; stay home if you’re sick; cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze. Then they saw the petition.

Though public-health officials across the country have urged Canadians to take a measured response to the coronavirus, a panic akin to the one from 2003’s SARS outbreak has already taken hold. To date, there is one confirmed and one presumptive case of the new virus in Canada. Ms. Go shared much of this when she testified at Ontario’s public hearings on the SARS crisis but she was disappointed to find nothing about racism in the inquiry’s 2007 report. Recommendations on how to respond to racist rhetoric would have been helpful for future outbreaks such as this one, she said.

The next day, he noticed a drop in business throughout downtown Toronto’s Chinatown and its dozens of restaurants – something he blames on fears about the virus. He repeated the message that the district was safe, as was the food, and called on politicians to have meals in Chinese restaurants as then-prime minister Jean Chrétien did during the 2003 SARS outbreak to signal to Canadians that doing so was safe.

The way in which the video has been shared has vilified and othered Chinese people, says Kevin Huang, executive director of the Hua Foundation, a Vancouver-based non-profit that promotes racial equity. In a research paper about SARS and the stigmatization of the Chinese population in Canada, he found that racist sentiments that had previously been internalized or only shared during private conversations “found explicit expression during the outbreak.”

Piss off people.

Im sorry how is it racist to want to protect your family? If u went to China recently stay the hell home! Get checked out then we're cool. Nothing is racist about this. On a regular day Asians are quite racist people , amazing to see the pot calling the kettle black. SMH

Even some Chinese are against Chinese, sadly!

Divisive politics in everything from the left. Please.

it's all they hype.... should really get a grip and put it into perspective

The whole world is racist, get over it, this has been around for thousands of years. Cover your ass and take care of yourselves at all times, no one else will ever do that for you.

That is the way people are. Still affected by many vile comments because my parents were German even though I was born here. Of course, many now consider all European/British looking people the same and vile as looks become more important than thought and understanding. ......

Why do they never warn us about racism towards the white children?

1. Chinese isn't a race 2. I'm pretty sure parents won't really care about the false racism accusations when there's a plague-like virus dropping people

Really important that this story about pushing back against racism during the coronavirus crisis not be behind the paywall - come on step up here!

Yeah, a global pandemic caused by a bush meat (bat soup, etc) market is probably not a good look for the Chinese community, even with all 5000 years of history.

Are the school boards worried the coronavirus will affect their rotating strikes? If parents are keeping kids at home for fear of death by flu pandemic, then parents won’t be annoyed and force the government to reach a deal.

Yes, Canadiens are racist. That’s what’s the problem

When did self-preservation and health and welfare of your kids become anti-chinese xenophobia. 🙄😷

The virus is coming from China and as I read and understood its coming because of some ppl there eats bats and wild animals. In my opinion if parents told there children to keep distance and be caution way better then losing their own child. May God bless.

If the virus starts spreading here the last thing you should worry about is whether or not you seem racist lol

Communists and Chinese. We do need some separation between the two.

I believe the directive was for anyone who visited or had contact with someone visited China. Is saying only people of Chinese descent fit description? The students affected will be just fine with break.Better safe than sorry. I was quarantined with SARS & survived

But but...that's impossible...this isn't Quebec...no racists in Ontario ...you guys kept saying that they were all in Quebec...you...you mean you didn't tell the whole truth But but you're Canada's newspaper, you wouldn't have any biases of any kind....would you?

School? I'm the only Chinese person in my workplace. I happen to have a cold cuz it's cold and flu season. My coworkers need to get the same education.

Are Chinese people racist for wearing masks then?

Racism is a side effect of failed Liberal policies. That's what happens when people learn the truth. Canada was far less racist when everyone knew and accepted the rest of the world for what it is, a shithole. Diversity is not our strength.

If those parents teaching their children being racist to Chinese people is okay then I'd assume watching their children die from the coronavirus would occupy their time otherwise spent being racist. We don't learn until we learn, good luck to those people and their kids.

You sure it didnt warn against assuming coronvirus' gender?
