The training program is part of an ongoing technical cooperation project between the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Department of Health called Introducing Evidence-Based Relapse Prevention Program to Drug Dependence Treatment and Rehabilitation Centers . It seeks to improve treatment methods in DOH-owned treatment and rehabilitation centers .
The JICA-backed training adopts the intensive drug treatment program called Matrix Model, a style of treatment designed to aid in the recovery of dependents from stimulant substances like methamphetamine and cocaine. However, this approach will be introduced in the local context. In 2018, the JICA project team and DOH representatives visited drug treatment facilities in Japan and the US Matrix Institute to study other countries’ approaches to drug treatment and rehabilitation.
