Healthcare workers experience more workplace violence compared to any other private sector professional. A bill passed in the House that could help protect these workers.Courtney pointed to the fact that 32 Republican representatives supported the bill, along with the Kentucky Nurses Association. “We’re hoping that they are going to prevail on [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell,” Courtney said, referring to the Kentucky nurses. “Because, you know, saying ‘no’ to nurses is not easy.”The level of violence against health care workers has increased dramatically -- 63% -- from 2006 to 2016,Courtney suggests that this increase is due to the rise of heroin and opioid use, as well as an overall increase in “general behavioral health issues.
If the bill becomes law, Courtney says it could help more than just health care professionals. By saving on worker’s compensation costs, lost time from work, and burnout, companies could end up saving money, despite paying for training and the costs of raising standards. But for many health care workers who have promised to"do no harm," the bill has come too late. Harm has been done to them.
We deserve to be safe at work. Employers. Take this seriously
Are you a real girl?
It depends on what kind of assault you talking about..are you talking about co-workers to co-workers.. are you talking about health care workers to patients. either or, Part of it is.. they are over worked, they should only work 4hrs a day, to many people to care for.. for 8-12hrs
100% attacks on patients, especially the elderly, are done by health care workers. Which is more concerning?
Don’t forget teachers...
Where is the 'we know you're faking' crowd now?
Yeah, so? It is only logical. We get whacked by Dementia/confused patients daily. It literally is part of the job. Nothing will change beyond learning to dodge better and staying out of range when possible.
We allow it because these people are “sick” where is our hazard pay... tasers would be a nice add on to our scrubs
wow!
Many are patients confused and scared and start hitting.
not true farm workers are hurt the most and so are prison guards,
Doesn't surprise me. I've heard of some nursing home corporations taking the approach of 'you work in their home so deal with the residents' shenanigans'
My sister is a special needs teacher in a middle school. Last week she went to the hospital with a cut under her eye.
GOP voted against a bill requiring employers to have workplace violence plans to protect health care & social service workers. All the GOPers you see on Cmtes. voted against the bill.
I can think of two reasons, the failed war on drugs, and the high-stakes, stressful, antagonistic for-profit game of healthcare roulette all Americans are forced to play with the ER as their last stand.
HR 1309 Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act: • risk assessment and identification • recognize high-risk situations • violent incident log • past violent incidents American Hospital Association opposes HR 1309.
My sister is an ER nurse and she has been hit, bitten, headbutted, spit on, had feces thrown at her and more. Most of it from drug addicts.
my hometown...thought I’d share.
Not surprised
Between detoxing patients(drug and etoh), dementia patients, mental health patients the psychosocial etc, healthcare workers manage a minefield of situations that put their mental and physical health at risk daily. Oh and yes, we work days, nights, weekends and holidays.
👀
Break that stat down to mental health facilities...
I have also seen health workers treat patients and their families badly. It goes both ways.
And guess what? They don’t kill the attacker and claim they feared for their lives. They just deal with it as part of the job
BScotTanner so true and terrifying.
As a nurse in hospital setting - I’ve had confused pt spit in my face. Was stabbed in the thigh with a pencil. Pt grabbed my braid and slammed my head into the bed rail. Was choked with my own stethoscope-thankfully it snapped in 2. Had fingers broken...

Protect the healthcare workers- or you’ll find over time that nobody will want to work in healthcare anymore.
Safety violations & threat of ones job has increased.Hero’s are those who disregard safety to violently offending workers by cussing them & actually threatening to laying hands on them . It’s the GOP dream workers.Who spend months to years away from their family for the dollar.
