Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines executive director Teodoro Padilla said they were already selling the medicines to the government at these prices for the past few years., among the medicines are those for heart and kidney diseases, diabetes, asthma, psoriasis, neurological disorders, human immunodeficiency virus and infectious diseases.
According to the Department of Health’s Drug Reference Index, medicine for breast cancer was procured by the Health Department at least 74 per cent lower than the prevailing market price, while the price of a kidney drug was reduced by 50 per cent. Padilla said the low prices in the market belied accusations that pharmaceutical companies had been overpricing their products.
“We practise responsible pricing and we see now the need to explain our views on this matter. We believe that through the DoH, we would be able to extend the same lower-priced medicines to the public.”
