Streeting declares Care Quality Commission 'not fit for purpose' after a report found the regulator is unable to effectively judge the quality of health and care services

It found inspection levels that were still well below where they were pre-Covid, a lack of clinical expertise among inspectors, a lack of consistency in assessments, and problems with the CQC’s IT system. “Significant internal failings” are hamperingproviders are waiting too long for their registration and rating to be updated, with implications for local capacity. “I know this will be a worrying development for patients and families who rely on CQC assessments when making choices about their care. I want to reassure them that I am determined to grip this crisis and give people the confidence that the care they’re receiving has been assessed. The review is being led by Penny Dash, chair of North West London Integrated Care Service, who was appointed by the Department for Health and Social Care on behalf of the Cabinet Office. It forms part of the the Cabinet Office’s Public Bodies Review programme, which was launched in 2022, with the aim of reviewing 125 public bodies and saving the taxpayer around £800m over three years.
